Riverside Storybook was a teen-created, teen-curated, and teen-contributed art and literary journal based in Spokane, Washington. It featured art, poetry, photography, and writing from Spokane teenagers. We were independent from any school or organization. Starting Spring 2016, we successfully published four volumes over four years.
Riverside Storybook was run by teenagers, many of whom graduated high school in 2019. It didn't make sense to run a journal for teenagers past high school. While bittersweet, we are proud of what we have accomplished and have all the reason to celebrate.
Cultivating creativity in young people is so important. Riverside Storybook became a reality because in 2015, no publication in Spokane actively invited creative submissions from teenagers. Evidenced by the response to our first call for submissions, it was needed.
We hope our artists’ experience of submitting, working with editors, and seeing written or visual work in print is encouraging. We also hope that Riverside Storybook will lead by example, as there are many art advocacy opportunities in Spokane.
